The story follows Tanaka Ayumu, a first-year high school student who has a secret crush on his senior, Yaotome Urushi, the president of the unofficial Shogi club. Determined to confess his feelings, Tanaka makes a promise—he’ll only tell her how he feels after he beats her in a game of shogi. But there’s one problem: he’s still a beginner, and Yaotome always wins.
While Tanaka struggles to improve, Yaotome keeps teasing him, trying to get him to admit his feelings. But he refuses to let his poker face crack. Even though his shogi victory seems far off, this is the story of how he might just ‘checkmate’ her heart in a different way.
