Fate/Apocrypha takes place in an alternate timeline from Fate/stay night. In this version of events, the powerful Greater Grail was stolen from Fuyuki after the Third Holy Grail War and vanished for decades. By the early 2000s—around when the Fifth Holy Grail War would normally occur—the secretive Yggdmillennia clan publicly announces they’ve claimed the Grail and are breaking away from the Mage’s Association.
The Association sends fifty magi to reclaim the artifact, but nearly all are wiped out immediately by the formidable Lancer of Black. The lone survivor triggers the Greater Grail’s backup system, setting the stage for an unprecedented battle involving fourteen summoned Servants.
