Akatsuki no Yona, also known as Yona of the Dawn, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Mizuho Kusanagi. It has been serialized in Hakusensha’s shōjo manga magazine Hana to Yume since August 2009. The story follows Princess Yona of the Kingdom of Kouka, who lives a sheltered and carefree life in Hiryuu Castle, protected by her loyal bodyguard and childhood friend, Son Hak, and her peaceful father, King Il.
Everything changes when Yona’s other childhood friend and secret love, Soo-won, visits the castle. Hoping to confess her feelings for him to her father, Yona instead witnesses Soo-won murdering King Il and declaring himself the rightful ruler of Kouka. Hak intervenes, rescuing Yona, and the two flee to Hak’s hometown, the Wind Tribe village.
Under the guidance of Hak’s grandfather, Son Mundok, they seek out an oracle named Iksu, who shares the ancient legend of the four dragon warriors who once united the kingdom under the first king, Hiryuu. Determined to save Kouka, Yona, Hak, and Iksu’s assistant Yun embark on a journey to find the reincarnated dragons and reclaim the kingdom.
