In the distant future, the world lies in ruins. Humanity survives within massive mobile fortress cities called Plantations. Inside these fortresses, young pilots are raised in a place known as Mistilteinn—or the “birdcage”—completely cut off from the outside world. These children know nothing of freedom or the open sky; their sole purpose is to fight in endless missions.
Their enemies are strange, towering creatures called Kyōryū. To combat them, the children pilot giant mechs known as Franxx. For them, operating these machines is the only proof of their existence.
Among them is a boy named Hiro, designated as Code:016. Once hailed as a prodigy, he has now fallen behind, deemed useless by the system. In this world, failing to pilot a Franxx means being erased from existence. But everything changes when he meets a mysterious girl with two horns growing from her head—her name is Zero Two.
