Shinmen Takezo grows up in late 16th century Japan during the turbulent Sengoku era. Feared by his village as a violent wild child, he flees home at seventeen with a friend and joins the Toyotomi army to fight in the Battle of Sekigahara. When the Tokugawa clan emerges victorious, ushering in centuries of shogunate rule, Takezo and his comrade barely survive. They vow to make something of their lives, but their paths soon diverge. Forced into hiding as a wanted criminal, Takezo must reinvent himself under a new name.
Vagabond, a manga by Takehiko Inoue, reimagines the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi’s life, inspired by Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel *Musashi*. The series earned acclaim, winning the Kodansha Manga Award in 2000 and the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize in 2002, along with an Eisner Award nomination in 2003.
